QAUL TARANA (Man Kuntu Maula) (‘The Chishti Anthem’)

Pir Zia Inayat Khan asked us to learn, perform and record this song a few
years ago. His wish was for this piece to be brought back in this day and age. We have woven in various current experimental elements while still seeking to honor the traditional piece.

“This is the foundational song in the Qawwali genre of Sufi singing, as cultivated by the Chishti Sufi Order. But it is more than an anthem. It is a ritual song. It is very weighty and full of spiritual power. Every Qawwali group has its own variation on the basic lyrics, as they weave other poems in Persian or Hindi or Urdu into the basic lyrics, to explain and amplify the message. The basic lyrics tell a saying in Arabic of the Prophet Muhammad, when he announced that Ali (his son-in-law) would be the spiritual leader after him, and since then Chishti Sufis consider Ali to be the first saint and foutain-head of Sufi spiritual authority.” – Scott Kugle
