River Narmada (2015 Remaster)

about

River Narmada-
Pir Zia specifically requested we do this piece; One, because of it’s beauty, two, because it was one of Inayat Khan’s favorites and three, to raise awareness. Moksha painstakingly learnt the piece from an old 1920’s recording and Pandit Mukesh Desai added his beauty to the mix.

"Narmada is known as one of the most sacred of Indian rivers, and is celebrated by its people in many songs. The Narmada valley has been home to many vibrant tribal cultures for millennia and hundreds of fertile farming villages. Much of this is in the path of destruction as new dams on the river have begun submerging vast areas. The native adivasi communities bear the brunt of displacement without rehabilitation. Remarkably, they have also awakened the conscience of the world-today, Narmada stands for the courageous struggle of people resisting unjust
displacement. All over the world, the human suffering caused by dams and displacement is no longer hidden. The non-violent struggle draws much strength from songs and music - both traditional songs as well as new ones of resistance. By presenting this Narmada song, we pay a tribute to the river and the courage of these people and their fight for justice.
